Swiftwater Farm Facilities
Premier Equestrian Facility

Our Facilities

Swiftwater Farm provides first-class facilities designed to support every aspect of breeding and training quality sport horses. From spacious pastures to professional riding areas, our property offers everything needed to raise healthy, athletic horses. Located in the beautiful Willamette Valley of Oregon, our farm combines modern amenities with the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest.

Pastures and Turnout

Our horses enjoy daily turnout in extensive pastures with excellent footing and safe, well-maintained fencing. Pasture turnout is essential for developing sound, athletic horses. According to equine welfare research cited by the American Association of Equine Practitioners, horses that receive regular turnout develop stronger bones and joints, better balance and coordination, and more stable temperaments than those kept primarily in stalls.

We maintain separate pastures for different groups - broodmares and foals, young horses, and horses in training each have appropriate turnout areas. This allows us to manage horses safely while ensuring everyone gets adequate exercise and social interaction.

Our pastures feature:

  • Lush grass maintained through proper management and fertilization
  • Safe, visible fencing that horses respect
  • Natural water sources supplemented with automatic waterers
  • Adequate shade from trees and run-in shelters
  • Good drainage to prevent muddy conditions
  • Regular rotation to maintain grass quality and reduce parasites

The creek that gives Swiftwater Farm its name runs through our property, providing both aesthetic beauty and a natural water source. The sound of running water creates a peaceful atmosphere that horses and people both enjoy.

Riding Arena

Our covered riding arena allows for year-round training regardless of Oregon's weather. The arena features:

  • Professional footing that provides cushioning while maintaining responsiveness
  • Excellent natural lighting supplemented with electric lights for early morning and evening riding
  • Standard dressage arena dimensions for proper training
  • Mirrors on one long side for riders to check position and horse's way of going
  • Storage for jump standards and rails
  • Good ventilation while providing protection from rain and wind

The arena footing is carefully maintained to provide safe, consistent work surfaces. We drag regularly and add new footing material as needed. Good footing reduces stress on horses' legs while allowing them to develop proper muscle without struggling against deep or slippery surfaces.

Barn and Stabling

While our horses spend most of their time turned out, we have comfortable stabling available for horses needing stall rest, mares ready to foal, or horses in intensive training. Our barn includes:

  • Spacious stalls with good ventilation
  • Rubber mats under bedding for comfort and ease of cleaning
  • Individual water buckets and feed tubs
  • Wide aisles for safe handling
  • Cross ties and grooming areas
  • Feed and tack storage
  • Wash stall with hot and cold water

Cleanliness is essential for horse health. Our barn is mucked daily, with stalls stripped and thoroughly cleaned weekly. Fresh bedding, good ventilation, and regular cleaning prevent respiratory problems and create a pleasant environment for both horses and people.

Foaling Areas

Pregnant mares move to special foaling stalls as their due dates approach. These extra-large stalls provide safe, comfortable spaces for foaling with:

  • Camera monitoring systems so we can observe without disturbing mares
  • Thick bedding for foal safety
  • Easy access for veterinary assistance if needed
  • Calm, quiet location away from general barn activity

After foaling, mares and foals gradually transition to small paddocks where they can move around while remaining separate from the general herd. This allows bonding time and ensures foals are strong and steady before joining larger groups.

Round Pen and Training Areas

For working young horses and doing groundwork, we have a round pen with good footing. This enclosed space allows us to work horses loose, introduce new concepts in a controlled environment, and do free jumping evaluations.

We also have several smaller paddocks used for individual turnout, introduction of new horses to groups, and as holding areas during barn cleaning and maintenance.

Property and Location

Swiftwater Farm encompasses acres of gently rolling terrain typical of the Willamette Valley. Our property includes:

  • Mix of pastures, wooded areas, and creek frontage
  • Scenic views of surrounding countryside
  • Natural windbreaks from trees
  • Excellent drainage
  • Rich, fertile soil that grows quality pasture

Our location in Springfield, Oregon provides the ideal climate for raising horses. The Pacific Northwest offers:

  • Mild winters that allow year-round turnout
  • Adequate rainfall for lush pastures without irrigation in most years
  • Moderate summers without extreme heat
  • Beautiful scenery and peaceful rural character

The area is home to a strong equestrian community with excellent veterinarians, farriers, feed suppliers, and other horse professionals. This infrastructure supports quality horse care and provides resources for education and improvement.

Horse Wellness and Movement

Our facility design reflects current understanding of equine wellness and natural movement patterns. Horses are athletes designed to move many miles per day, and our management practices honor this biology. Spacious pastures encourage natural movement and play, which develops coordination, strength, and healthy joints better than any artificial exercise program.

Research in equine behavior and physiology shows that horses with regular turnout and freedom of movement develop stronger bones, healthier hooves, and better mental attitudes. They learn to navigate varied terrain, building proprioceptive awareness that translates to better performance under saddle. The ability to move, roll, and interact with other horses supports both physical and psychological health.

Our facilities support this natural lifestyle while providing the structure needed for safe, professional horse management. The combination of freedom and expert care creates an environment where horses thrive.

Maintenance and Improvement

We continuously maintain and improve our facilities to provide the best possible environment for our horses. Regular property maintenance includes:

  • Fence inspection and repair
  • Pasture management (mowing, fertilizing, dragging)
  • Arena footing maintenance
  • Barn repairs and painting
  • Equipment servicing
  • Water system checks

We also invest in improvements as needed, whether that's adding new fencing, upgrading equipment, or making other changes that benefit our horses. Quality facilities are an investment in producing quality horses.
